In 1961, one of EEM’s founding team members, Gwen Hensley, spoke of “the impossible dream”—the dream of placing God’s Word in the heart language of every person behind the Iron Curtain.
It seemed impossible. Borders were closed. Bibles were banned. Yet, with courage and creativity, EEM found ways to move Scripture into places where darkness tried to shut it out—until 1989, when the Iron Curtain fell and freedom’s light broke through.
But the dream didn’t end there. It expanded.Today, EEM serves 35+ nations in 30+ languages, providing Bibles and biblical materials to schools, churches, prisons, refugee camps, and orphanages—always free to all.
What began with a handful of dreamers carrying suitcases of Bibles has become a movement carrying hope to millions.

Elmira’s Story—Saved From Addiction
Kyrgyzstan
Before Christ, Elmira’s days in an industrial town in Kyrgyzstan were marked by heavy drinking, frequent quarrels, and neglected children—an exhausted cycle that kept her family in crisis. One afternoon she collapsed in the street from overdrinking; Christian neighbors found her, carried her home, washed and fed the children, and stayed to make sure everyone was safe. They offered gentle counsel about the path of destruction she was on and shared that there was a better way of life through Jesus Christ. They gifted her a Bible.
Elmira brought the Bible home, and she and her husband began to read and pray together. In time, both were freed from addiction and gave their lives to Christ. Today, they host a small house church for people overcoming alcoholism. We have the honor of partnering with the Bible Society of Kyrgyzstan to provide free Kyrgyz-language Bibles, which Elmira and her husband now share with neighbors and those in recovery who gather in their home. One Bible rarely stops at one person—when God’s Word changes a life, it changes many.
Meet Serhiyko—Ukrainian orphan boy starts Bible study in hostpital
Ukraine
Evacuated from war-torn Kupyansk, Serhiyko and his grandmother arrived at a hospital in Kharkiv carrying deep grief—his mother had been killed in recent shelling. While recovering, he asked for a book. Our ministry partners brought a Children’s Bible and a Scripture activity book. As they sat with him, he asked how to pray for another boy taken into surgery, and he asked curious questions about heaven as he processed the death of family.
In the days that followed, Serhiyko began inviting other boys in the hospital—many who had also lost parents—to look through his Bible and color the pages of his activity book. His grandmother soon requested additional Bibles, more activity books, and resources to help her talk with the children about God. We partner with local ministries to provide free Children’s Bibles and activity books that families like Serhiyko’s can share with others.
