The Gospel for Millions in Greece: Operation Joshua & Transforming Lives with Jonathan Macris

Across the Mediterranean landscape, where ancient ruins meet modern cities, the light of the Gospel continues to shine in powerful and unexpected ways. Through a unique collaboration between EEM and Hellenic Ministries, thousands have received the Word of God in their heart language. This is not just a story of distributing Bibles in Greece—it’s a testimony of spiritual revival, community, and faith-based humanitarian efforts driven by authentic partnership and love.

At EEM, we believe in the transformative power of God’s Word. It’s a privilege to witness how freely distributed Bibles can ignite spiritual revival and bring hope to communities across the globe. Today, we invite you to journey with us to Greece, a land steeped in biblical history, where our incredible partners at Hellenic Ministries are making an extraordinary impact. Led by the passionate Jonathan Macris, their work through initiatives like Operation Joshua is a testament to unwavering faith and the profound difference a personal encounter with the Gospel can make. It’s a story of collaboration, perseverance, and lives eternally touched by the love of Jesus.

A Legacy of Faith: Hellenic Ministries in Greece

Hellenic Ministries has a rich history rooted in a deep commitment to spreading the Gospel in Greece, a land where the Apostle Paul himself walked and taught. Jonathan Macris’s connection to missions began at just six months old, growing up in the primitive jungles of what is now Papua New Guinea. His father, a pioneer missionary, instilled in him a spirit of innovation and an unyielding dedication to sharing God’s word, even in the face of immense challenges. This foundation laid the groundwork for the impactful ministry that Hellenic Ministries has become today.

Jonathan’s own journey brought him to Greece, the homeland of his parents, over 30 years ago. He served in the Greek army in Corinth, where the daily sunrise reminded him of Paul’s presence. Witnessing only a handful of small churches in such a historically significant Christian nation deeply burdened his soul, fueling his desire to help Greeks truly understand a personal relationship with God. This firsthand experience cemented his commitment to evangelism in Greece and ensuring free Bible distribution across the country.

From Jungle to the Acropolis: Jonathan’s Unique Path

Jonathan Macris’s early life in Papua New Guinea was far from ordinary. Living deep in the jungle, his friends were indigenous people who wore little clothing, and he felt the mud between his toes as they played together, hardly knowing each other’s language but completely content. This upbringing, cut off from the outside world except for occasional small plane deliveries, shaped his perspective on humanity and the dignity of every individual, regardless of their background.

The contrast between Papua New Guinea, where the Gospel arrived only after World War II, and Greece, where Paul himself evangelized, highlights the unique historical context of Hellenic Ministries’ work. Despite Greece being considered a Christian country, the number of born-again Evangelical believers was remarkably small when Jonathan’s family moved there in 1979 – around 5,000 people. This stark reality underscored the tremendous need for re-evangelization and for providing Bibles in Greece that people could easily understand.

The Birth of Hellenic Ministries’ Vision

Jonathan’s father, after a miraculous recovery from tropical diseases in 1978, felt called to minister to his homeland. The family’s move to Greece in July 1979 marked the beginning of a ministry driven by tremendous need and a pioneering spirit. Initially, his father invested his retirement savings into evangelistic meetings, flying evangelists to Greece.

A significant public response to an open-air program in Athens’ King’s Gardens revealed a widespread openness to hearing the Gospel across the country. This led to planning summer evangelistic outreaches that lasted up to a month, reaching every city and village square for 15 to 20 years. This early focus on public proclamation laid the groundwork for future initiatives like Operation Joshua, which would dramatically expand their reach in Christian mission work in Greece.

Operation Joshua:  Greece with God’s WordCovering

Operation Joshua stands as a monumental undertaking in Christian missions, driven by a profound desire to place God’s Word into every rural household across Greece. This free Bible distribution initiative is a powerful example of faith-based humanitarian efforts, demonstrating the incredible impact of partnering for missions. What began as a bold step during the 2004 Olympic Games has blossomed into a movement that has touched nearly 9,000 villages and distributed over 1.5 million New Testaments by God’s grace.

The vision behind Operation Joshua was born from Jonathan’s burden for the countless small villages across Greece that seemed impossible to reach through traditional methods. The Olympics presented a unique opportunity to mobilize volunteers, even those who didn’t speak Greek, to carry Bibles and hang them on doorknobs, trusting in the Greek people’s curiosity to read God’s Word in the privacy of their homes. This innovative approach to Greek Bible distribution proved to be incredibly effective.

The Unfolding of a Miracle: Faith in Action

The initial order of 50,000 Bibles for the 2004 Olympics was a monumental leap of faith for Hellenic Ministries, as the payment alone exceeded their entire annual budget. Yet, 350 volunteers showed up, and teams were sent to 40 islands, surrounding Greece with a nine-day project of prayer, Bible distribution, and public proclamation. While they didn’t reach every island, the commitment to “finish next year” set the stage for Operation Joshua’s ongoing success.

The passion of the volunteers was undeniable. When fires broke out in Southern Greece in 2006, the team was compelled to distribute more Bibles, ordering another 30,000. This grassroots momentum, with teams consistently asking “what are we doing next summer?”, pushed the ministry forward, expanding their reach prefecture by prefecture. By the time they reached Corinth, they had distributed 120,000 Bibles in 800 villages, highlighting the incredible scale of this Bible distribution in Greece.

The Power of Partnership: EEM and Operation Joshua

EEM is incredibly proud to be a close partner in Operation Joshua, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Hellenic Ministries in this vital work. The impact of this collaboration extended beyond the sheer number of Bibles distributed; it represented 1.5 million homes touched by the Gospel, an unimaginable sowing of spiritual seed across rural Greece. Our shared mission was to provide free Bible distribution to many nations in different languages and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to encounter the life-changing truths of scripture.

This partnership was a testament to the beautiful unity of God’s people. EEM provided the Bibles, and Hellenic Ministries, through dedicated volunteers, ensured they reach every corner of the nation. It’s a humbling experience to witness how God orchestrated connections, like our own Dirk Smith and Jonathan Macris, realizing they were born in the same city, just one year apart, long before their ministries intertwined. These divine connections reinforced the idea that God prepares good works for us long before we are even born.

The Intersection of Evangelism and Refugee Ministry in Greece

The refugee crisis in Europe created both a humanitarian emergency and a spiritual opportunity. It has created unprecedented opportunities for evangelism in Greece. Amidst the turmoil, EEM and Hellenic Ministries have expanded their Bible-based refugee ministry to meet people where they are—both physically and spiritually. As displaced individuals search for stability and meaning, ministries like EEM and Hellenic bring them the hope found in Scripture.

Refugee Ministry Greece: Meeting Needs and Sharing Hope

From Afghan families arriving on the shores of Lesvos to Iranian believers encountering Christ through dreams, the refugee ministry in Greece reveals the boundless reach of God’s grace. Volunteers distribute Bibles in Arabic and Farsi, often leading to powerful gospel impact stories and life transformation, truly inspiring stories of faith.

Many of these individuals, once recipients of a simple gift of Scripture, now lead ministries, serve their communities, and testify of Jesus’ power. This is not just evangelism Greece needs—it’s the Gospel alive and moving among the nations.

Spiritual Revival in Greece and Beyond

Despite a small Protestant evangelical population, the Greek evangelical movement is growing. Churches are reporting readiness for harvest, and young believers are stepping into leadership roles. The Greek Bible distribution project is not only seeding faith in rural homes but is also awakening a deeper hunger for truth among city dwellers.

Pastors, once discouraged, now speak of overflowing interest in Christ. Orthodox leaders are recognizing the value of accessible Scripture. As Jonathan Macris says, “We are living in a season of awakening.”

The Harvest is Rich: Impact Stories and Future Hopes

The impact of EEM’s ministry outreach and Hellenic Ministries’ work goes far beyond statistics. It’s about transformed lives, like the 16-year-old refugee from Iran who, after receiving a Bible, now serves on the U.S. board of Hellenic Ministries and manages a Costco in California. This story beautifully illustrates that the Gospel is not just about saving souls, but about transforming lives and fostering dignity for every individual.

We’ve also heard incredible testimonies of individuals being drawn to Jesus through dreams, only to find the confirmation of those dreams within the New Testaments provided by Hellenic Ministries and EEM. These powerful accounts of spiritual revival in Greece highlight the truth that God actively seeks to reach people, and when His Word hits “good soil,” there’s no stopping its growth. This is the essence of evangelism in Greece – meeting people where they are and providing them with the Word that speaks directly to their hearts.

Stories of Divine Encounter

One particularly moving story shared by Jonathan recounts a refugee who, after fleeing his home, received a New Testament and was pointed to the Gospel of Mark by Hellenic Ministries staff. The refugee affirmed that everything Jesus had shown him in his dreams was found within the pages of the Bible, leading to an undeniable conviction of truth. Such narratives underscore the profound impact of free Bible distribution and the direct connection individuals can forge with the divine through God’s inspired Word.

These personal accounts are what fuel our passion at EEM. They demonstrate that our joint efforts with Hellenic Ministries are not merely about logistics and distribution; they are about facilitating direct encounters with Jesus. The stories of Afghan, Iranian, and Iraqi refugees all sharing similar experiences of divine dreams confirmed by the Bible are powerful testaments to God’s rescue mission and the far-reaching effects of Christian mission work in Greece.

Looking Towards a Bountiful Harvest

As Operation Joshua concluded its final year of large-scale door-to-door Bible distribution in rural Greece, there was a tangible excitement for what God will do next. Pastors were sensing a time of “harvest” in Greece, believing that people were more ready than ever to embrace God’s love. The vision extended beyond Greece’s borders, hoping that the love of God, once ignited, will spill over into neighboring Mediterranean nations that are yet to experience His goodness.

EEM is committed to supporting this next chapter, whatever it may be. We encourage our supporters to continue praying for Hellenic Ministries, for purity, faith, and safety for Jonathan and his staff, and for the resources needed to continue their vital work. The dedication of those involved in Bible outreach events such as this and their commitment to reaching the unreached is truly inspiring.
